Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. Its violet colour is the result of impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals.
The name comes from the greek "amethustos" meaning "not intoxicated", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. They wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels to prevent intoxication, therefore amethyst was highly prized. As a meditation stone it helps quieten the mind and is an aid to finding deep inner peace and discovering the wisdom within us.
